Peter George, 83, Ernst and Young Partner, Vocalist and Choir Director for Greek Orthodox Churches

He wrote the accounting firm's first manual on state taxes in Ohio.

Peter George, who wrote the Ernst and Young accounting firm’s first manual on state taxes in Ohio, may have been better known as a choir director and vocalist at Greek Orthodox and other churches.

The 83-year-old Bath Township resident, who died May 19, served as choir director at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, where most of the worship service is sung.

George also sang with the choir and the men's chorus at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron. He was a featured vocal soloist at First Presbyterian Church in Akron and in many local concerts.

The Akron native graduated from Central High School in 1946 and attended Juilliard School of Music in New York. Following a stint in the Army, he studied at .

He joined the Ernst and Ernst accounting firm in 1959 and became a partner in 1970. The firm became Ernst and Young before George wrote the company’s first Ohio tax manual. He served as a consultant on subsequent editions.

George was a past president of the Cleveland Chapter of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants.

He served on the Annunciation church board of trustees and belonged to its men’s club and the Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association).

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sophie (nee Lazos); children, Stephen, Dean and Christina Manousos; three grandchildren; and siblings, Nick and Mary Bess.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron, OH 44304.
