Local Teens Perform All- City Musical "Ragtime" 6/14-15

Last year, audiences flocked to the inaugural All-City musical production Hairspray at the Akron Civic Theatre. This year Ragtime will take over the Civic for three shows only next Friday and Saturday.
Based on the 1975 novel of the same name, Ragtime tells the story of three families of very different circumstances and how each of them interact and try to survive and thrive in pre-WWI New York. With a book by Terrence McNally, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, Ragtime has garnered numerous awards and had been revived both on Broadway and in London's West End.

This Tony-winning show features a cast of over 50 students from all over Summit County including students from Revere High School, Copley High School, Firestone High School, Our Lady of the Elms and Akron Early College, among many others. The students have been working very hard to put this complicated show together in around six weeks from the first read-through to the final curtain call. Under the direction of Mark Zimmerman, high school kids transform into Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, Emma Goldman and other famous faces of the time. Barbara Bellamy, music director, helps the cast power through the mostly sung-though show without missing a beat (pun intended) while Rena Baker makes the dances Civic-worthy. Overall, this show is worth seeing because it claims to have the most talented actors in the area and does not disappoint!

Ragtime runs at the Akron Civic Theatre June 14th at 7:30 and June 15th at 2:30 and 7:30
