Bites Nearby: Winking Lizard

Major pub grub and a bevy of beers.

What can be said about this local franchise that hasn’t already been said? The Tavern is a Cleveland-Akron institution, known for great sports bar food, saucy buffalo wings, a resplendent libations list and their annual “World Tour of Beers,” which celebrates a 25th Anniversary this year.

Whether it’s friendship, camaraderie and HDTV during “The Big Game,” or simply a family-friendly dining experience, the Lizard goes all out to please. Wait staff bends over backwards to keep customers happy.

The menu doesn’t disappoint, either—featuring burgers and chicken sandwiches, wings (Holy MAGMA wings, Batman!) and some real crowd pleasers like the Pot Roast Melt sandwich, and a Beer-Battered Haddock Dinner that even impressed a British citizen we were dining with last time.

And then there’s the coveted World Tour, which keeps the Lizard stocked with the best ales, kolsches, lagers, porters, stouts to be had in Northeast Ohio. This year’s World Tour—think of their beer menu as a passport to be fully stamped and you’re well on your way—features over 250 different beers!!

Translation: Enjoy dozens of brewing styles, leading up to a true grand finale. Drink one of each featured bevvie before the end of the year, finish the tour and score a jacket… not to mention bragging rights in your social circles and poker nights. (Psst… the jacket comes in men's and women's cuts).

The Lizard has been consistent (and peerless) for a very long time, and does American food, folks and fun on a grand scale better than just about anyone in the region. That’s why many people bag the football parties and hit their nearby location.

Think about it: All this and a clean kitchen at home? What’s not to love?
