Bites Nearby: Skyway Drive-In

Akron drive-in takes burger lovers back to the 1950s.

That 1950s curbside service experience is king at Skyway, an Akron-area favorite that has been in business for nearly 60 years and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Large family founded the very first Skyway Drive-In on Route 18 (Market Street) with the customary “pull in, turn your lights on” motif. Don’t be alarmed when you see a Skyway wait staff sprint straight for your car like they’re on fire—customer service is a key to this burger-fry-shake establishment’s success. Skyway Drive-In’s SkyHi double-decker burger recently competed against Swenson’s Galley Boy in a Food Network “Food Feuds” showdown (hosted by Iron Chef Michael Symon). But many Skyway enthusiasts will tell you that comparing the two is silly because they’re both so different. The same holds true for the drive-ins themselves: Skyway offers some quirky, flavorful nosh on their menu, including deep fried pork tenderloin- and chipped ham sandwiches, sauerkraut balls and zucchini sticks.

During Northeast Ohio’s warmer months, check out Skyway’s classic car cruise-ins, which are a popular stop after movies at the nearby Regal Cinema. And here’s a tip: The juicy, charbroiled chicken sandwich and “raw veg bag” is a must-do for the health-conscious. 619 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Rd., east of the Arlington Rd. intersection, Akron. 330-896-9350. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Prices: $2 to $5 for sandwiches, $4 to $14 for dinners.
