Bites Nearby: Rockne's

Local chain could teach big boys a lesson.

When many diners think fast, casual, affordable American restaurant chains, the names TGI Friday’s, Max & Erma’s and Applebee’s are usually the first to come to mind. But let’s face it: rarely (if ever) do any from that triumvirate deliver a memorable meal.

All three megachains could learn a lesson from ’s, an area franchise that has been delivering fresh, informal and reasonably priced food for many years—and all without tumbling into the sad cliché of cold, reheated and unctuous boredom.

It’s not really fair to compare Rockne’s and their American fare and pub food against said national brands. And yet, it’s really hard not to: their décor (think sports bar-pub, dark wood) is peppered with Summit County memorabilia, sports-themed bric-a-brac and (wait for it…) tons of HDTV sets, which offer a view of any game you might wish to see on a particular night.

What has long separated Rockne’s from the pack is the food—offered in large portions, at recession-busting prices, with great flavor profile variations. Want a burger and fries? Buy the ham-fisted Max the Knife burger platter and learn quickly why the Knife name transcends the pun.

But if your tastebuds strive for a much broader palate, Rockne’s has you covered with everything from salads (the Greek gyro salad rocks), to homemade soups (the legendary Cuban Black Bean soup is also a stunner) provide variety.

With a full-service bar, a decent kids menu and generally solid customer service, Rockne’s is a great place to unwind. Plus, it’s truly local and keeping happy neighbors from darkening those other chains’ doors. What’s not to love?

Ten area locations, including 2914 W. Market St., Fairlawn. 330-836-7662 www.rocknes.com. $6-$10 for lunches, $10 to $22 for entrees.
