Bites Nearby: Jubilee Donuts

Donuts fit for a King.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” So says Jack Torrance, that writerly type played by Jack Nicholson in the 1980 Stephen King film, “The Shining.” Maybe if he had tossed a donut or 12 into his diet, Torrance wouldn’t have been so uptight.

To wit, “Bites Nearby” most certainly includes delectable breakfast treats and Jubilee Donuts is the Rubber City’s premiere go-to donut option. Gritty Akronites may cite underground faves North Side Donuts as their “King,” but Jubilee parking lots suggest they’re (natch) “The Chosen One.” (Let us know when you're tired of the LeBron James jokes...)

With four Akron-area locations -- Cuyahoga Falls, Ellet, Akron and Tallmadge Circle -- this local donut shop franchise offers homespun, handmade donuts done to textbook perfection—so perfect, in fact, that morning people and night owls alike clamor for their glazed yeasty fryers, cake donuts and flavor-filled-and-raised goodness.

Want a jelly- or custard-filled donut? Jubilee blows these suckers up to the size of baseballs and dusts them with confectioner’s sugar. Maybe you’re a glazed donut type? Their yeasty take on the classic is so pillowy, it simply begs for a coffee bath. (Did we mention they have great coffee?)

If your mind (and sweet tooth) can conjure it, Jubilee does it: maple-iced cream sticks and chocolate cake donuts blanketed in ganache, to gooey-sweet southern pecan rolls that are simply mind-boggling.

OK, maybe this place wouldn’t have kept Nicholson’s character from going crazy. But with such divine treats in your backyard and at your beck and call, well, who wants to be sane?

Four area locations including 2686 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls 330-922-5592 www.jubileedonuts.com. Singles donuts start at under $1.
