Bites Nearby: Gasoline Alley

All-American food and atmosphere.

It may not look like much from the outside, and odds are the diminutive floor plan inside won’t blow you away either, but the food at Gasoline Alley is what people queue up for there.

This Bath Township establishment puts the “all” in “all-American,” and the portions here are nearly double what you get for many delicatessen standards. This rollicking roadside grille -- set up in an antiquated gas station -- would be comfortable smack dab on The Mother Road, daddy-o. In fact, it’s the kind of place Tod Stiles and Buz Murdock from the old Route 66 TV show would pop into between episodes.

With mouthwatering corned beef and tangy umami horseradish sauce both made in-house, the GA Reuben really puts the term "Dagwood sandwich” to shame. Unless you order what regular diners call the “sissy size” (a half-sandwich order), your steamy, salty and creamily melted sandwich comes to you as a thick-as-a-brick monstrosity.

Translation: Even if your friends say you have a big mouth, you may still need that knife and fork.

There’s something for everyone on the menu such as a savory beef tenderloin steak sandwich smothered with grilled onion, a whole slate/slab of “Fat Boy” burgers, huge breakfasts, a sumptuous Cherrystone Clam appetizer, diverse pizzas that include a Florentine Pie (spinach, smoked ham, mushrooms, Swiss), amazing clam chowder and super-delicious and crispy onion rings and fries.

And this says nothing -- and we mean nothing -- about the amazing beer selection to be had there.
