Summit DD and Community Partners Earn Statewide Honors

(Tallmadge, Ohio) – The County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board (Summit DD) and several Summit County partners were honored at the Ohio Public Images Media and Awareness Awards in Dublin, Ohio on March 10. The annual event recognizes individuals and organizations throughout Ohio who, through their exceptional efforts, succeed in creating a greater understanding and acceptance of people with developmental disabilities.

“Outreach and awareness efforts are key to making our communities a welcoming place for individuals with disabilities,” stated Summit DD Superintendent, John Trunk. “It’s an honor to be recognized by Ohio Public Images as a leader in the state for our awareness efforts.”

All together, the Summit County team won 13 awards for their 2013 efforts.

Summit DD was recognized for:
• Photograph in a weekly or monthly publication – Award of Excellence
• Internet usage other than a website – Award of Excellence
• Internal awareness within an Agency – Award of Excellence
• Overall awareness efforts – Award of Merit
• Audio-visual production – Award of Merit
• Special publication – Award of Merit
• Internal social media usage – Award of Merit

Akron Beacon Journal was recognized for:
• Photograph in publication (circ. over 100,00) – Award of Excellence for photographer, Michael Chritton
• Print journalism (circ. over 100,00) – Award of Merit for journalist, Rick Armon

Akron Rotary Club was recognized for:
• Individual or organization – Award of Merit

Hattie Larlham was recognized for:
• Internal social media usage – Award of Merit

And finally, the biggest award of the event was given to Andre Travis, a member of the first push-chair team in Akron Marathon history. He was named Self-Advocate of the year for his endless determination.

The County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board is a levy-supported agency that provides services to more than 4,000 individuals with disabilities and their families in Summit County.  It is the organization’s mission to be a primary community force that enables eligible individuals to work, live, and learn as equal citizens in their communities.  More information regarding the agency is available online at www.SummitDD.org.
