As a food lover, one thing I've certainly learned is that you don't have to spend a fortune to get a great meal, and sometimes the best gems in town are hidden right under your nose. Say, for example, in a strip plaza between the DMV and a drugstore.

I was originally lured into Mr. G's with a coupon (I'm not cheap-- I'm resourceful!) and have been back dozens of times since then either to grab a New York-style thin crust pizza to go or dine in and enjoy one of the terrific nightly specials.

This last time I was there, I started off with the brushetta, which is served with an extra side of Mr. G's marinara which is the perfect blend of sweet and savory, along some of their traditional Italian Wedding Soup, which is made fresh daily. As an entree, my boyfriend and I shared the lobster ravioli which was served in a creamy wine and butter sauce. I think it was only available during lent, so you might want to hurry back if you want to try it!

And I almost forgot to mention my favorite part about eating at Mr. G's --the restaurant is BYOB! Which means you can bring a bottle of wine (or a fancy Belgian beer, see photo.) and enjoy it while eating your meal, without breaking the bank.

Mr. G's is a family business that is locally owned and operated. The original "Mr. G," Francisco Giardina, arrived in New York from Italy in 1912. Today, it is his children and grandchildren that keep the tradition alive in just a few choice cities-- New York, Miami and Akron.

Mr. G's Pizza is located at 2955 West Market Street in the same plaza as the BMV at the intersection of Market and Miller Road. To learn more about their story or to puruse their menu or some exceptionally delicious looking fan photos, visit their website. Also, make sure to like their page on Facebook. They're open until 10pm everyday except Friday and Saturday, when they're open until 11pm. You can call them at (330) 836-1111.

After reading Ms. Charek's review of Mr. G's one can only come to the conclusion that there are two Mr. G eateries in Fairlawn. Unfortunately I found only one. Ms. Charek mentions that her favorite part about eating at Mr. G's is the "BYOB" feature. After the experience I had at this establishment I might suggest visitors to "BYOF", i.e. bring your own food. Granted it is Akron (Fairlawn) Ohio and there seems to be a dumbing down of the palate in this area, experience has taught me to research and accept only authentic faire when eating at local restaurants. My first venture to this so called Italian Restaurant was a disaster, I ordered the Calzone thinking how hard is it to get a simple item like Calzone wrong ? Well it must not be hard at all, I was served a huge doughy looking thing that was raw and cold on the inside. When I brought this to the attention of the counter person I was informed that it would be made right, not knowing that my Calzone would be re-heated to a burnt dry mass that was totally inedible. Recommendation: Steer clear of this place unless. of course you "BYOF" A great alternative would be Vaccaros on Ghent Road, real Italian food by people who care.

I don't know about the other food, as I simply went there for the pizza. According to Yelp!, this place was equal to, if not better, than Luigi's when it came to pizza. We decided to go since Luigi's was not yet open and we were craving some great pizza. WE LOVED IT. It's so hard for us to find a restaurant we would go back to. With kids. Definintely a favorite with their New York style pizza. Our only negative was the first time we actually stopped in. A party ran in ahead of us (literally) and with 2 kids in tow, they took the only highchairs available. It's pretty family-friendly, so I would recommend them getting a few more HC's. Side note, I also love Vaccaro's. My husband took me there for my 30th and we had a lovely time and a delicious meal. It's a nice place to have a delicious dinner with a glass (or 3!) of wine. But if you want a relaxed atmosphere and some amazing pizza, go with Mr Gs!
