Industry opinion

A high priority part of the the United States economy is manufacturing. Where the United States and Great Britain once led the world industrial production many now look to China. How can the United States get the focus back? I believe it has to be through emerging technical sectors that boost fields that were once on the decline. Where China’s goals are largely decided upon by the government the United States innovation goes largely unregulated.

Will non-conventional machining allow recycling? This is where the regulatory part of the government in the United States usually steps in. I became aware of an article that speaks of lowering material costs  by using recycled materials. The Filabot works by grinding plastic into small pieces and pushing these into a melter. Gravity-feeding of the plastic feedstock is done via a feed screw that pushes the plastic towards the extrusion die. In this way we could recycle failed projects.

With the freedom of expression in 3-d printing we must realize that a sword cuts both ways. In Australia criminals are using 3-d printed devices to effectively hack ATMs. However we also have the 3-d printed bust that could make most wanted posters irrelevant and could effectively start printing someone who makes these unauthorized withdrawls. Full crime scenes could be printed out for use by the justice systems

Where the United States has the upper hand is the internet. The same place where 3-d plans of weapons have appeared to the detriment of the industry, will be the same place where continuing innovation will take place. China doesn’t have this wide range of positive and negatives. Rather they would just like to stay the course until some spark wakes them out of their slumber.
