Suspicious Woman Scams Church-Goer for Prescription Money

Information provided by the Bath Township Police Department.

As a 77-year-old walked out of Bath Church on Nov. 4, she was approached by a woman whom she didn't recognize, according to a Bath Township police report.

The suspicious woman said, "You probably don't recognize me because of my short hair, and I haven't been to church in a year, but I need $40 for a prescription medicine," according to the report.

The suspect then walked around to the Bath woman's passenger door and got in the car. She told the woman she asked the minister for a gift card, but that he didn't give her one.

The Bath woman gave the woman $15 and the woman thanked her and said she'd pay her back.

Chief Michael McNeely said the woman is described as a tall female in her 30s with short brown hair. McNeely does not believe she is a church member.

McNeely said residents should be aware that this is a scam, and that it's the first of its kind in this area. However, there have been two reports of a man approaching women at the West Market Plaza asking for money. He is described as a tall black male who appears to be blind in one eye or has a blue eye.
