The largest organized effort seems to be a Facebook event — "National Same-Sex Kissing Day at Chick-Fil-A" — which has over 11,000 RSVPs.
There are several Chick-Fil-As in the area, including Beachwood, Mentor, Strongsville, Fairlawn and Cuyahoga Falls.
Outrage over Dan Cathy's statements that he does not support same-sex marriage, as well as his ongoing financial support of groups that fight to keep marriage as a heterosexual institution, triggered "National Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day" on Wednesday, organized by former Arkansas governor and Fox News host Mike Huckabee.
Chick-Fil-A will not release sales numbers, but they confirmed to CNN that the day set a record for the company.
Area Patch sites have been buzzing about the controversy:
- In Beachwood, dozens lined up to support the company. Most customers said that they were there because they supported Cathy's stance, his right to free speech, or both.
- Strongsville's Chick-Fil-A saw a line that stretched around the restaurant on Wednesday.
- Similarly, the line stretched out of the door in Mentor.
- And two Cuyahoga Falls Patch bloggers addressed the protest Thursday — one in support of Cathy, and one against.
