Romney Roundup: Speakers, Venue/Ticket Info and Traffic

Here's everything you need to know about Gov. Mitt Romney's visit to Cuyahoga Falls on Tuesday evening.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is headed our way, and there's several points to keep in mind before his arrival.

Here's what you need to know:

Venue/Ticket Info

Romney is expected to hold a "Victory Rally" at 7 p.m. in the Natatorium parking lot, which, over the last 24 hours, has been transformed into an outdoor venue complete with bleachers, stages and a big screen TV.

The public may begin lining up whenever they wish outside the city gym, but according to a Romney spokesperson, attendees won't be let into the venue until 5 p.m.

Upon entering, all attendees will go through airport-like security and should bring as few personal items as possible. No bags, sharp objects, umbrellas, liquids, or signs will be allowed in the venue. Cameras are permitted.

According to Aol Weather, temps will hover around 45 degrees by Tuesday evening with a 20 percent chance of precipitation.

Free tickets can still be picked up at the following locations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday:

Kent Victory Center
175 East Erie Street
Kent, OH, 44240

Stow Victory Center
3889 Darrow Road
Stow, OH, 44224

Summit GOP HQ
1755 Merriman Road, Suite 250
Akron, OH 44313

Wadsworth Victory Center
300 Weatherstone Drive, Suite 107
Wadsworth, OH, 44281

As of Monday evening, 10,000-plus tickets had been given away. Click here for additional ticket information.

Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart hopes roughly 15,000 people will attend the event, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.

Speakers and entertainment

Mayor Robart is expected to hit the stage at 7 p.m. to kick off the event. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Romney are due to take the stage at approximately 7:35 p.m.

According to mittromney.com, country music singer Jo Dee Messina will provide the entertainment.

Natatorium and road closures

  • 4th Street will be closed to traffic from Stow Avenue to Oakwood Drive on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
  • Oakwood Drive will be closed to traffic from 2nd Street to 4th Street on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Drivers may also experience some delays when the Romney motorcade arrives in
the Portage Trail, 2nd Street, 3rd Street and 4th Street area, according to a city press release.

For security purposes, the Natatorium will be closed to the public throughout Tuesday.

Given the all-day closure, annual and monthly Natatorium members will have their memberships extended by one day.

The city gym will reopen on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 a.m.

According to Mayor Robart's assistant Becky English, "any costs that are incurred by the city as a result of this event will be paid for by the Republican National Committee in Washington D.C."

Patch Local Editors John Deike, Amanda Harnocz and Megan Rozsa will provide live-tweeting/storify coverage, photos, video and general reporting throughout the afternoon and evening. Stay tuned!

I think Mayor Robart's decision to put this "civic event" ahead of the paying members of the Natatorium says volumes about his priorities - this is the last straw for me and he's lost what little respect and support I had had for him. It's time for "Cuyahoga Falls' longest tenured mayor" to let someone else lead the city...

Why not hold this event at the Portage Crossing, that is such a beautiful facility, another great job by ex-mayor Robart

Wonder if the same comment would hold true if Obama were at the Natatorium. All costs will be paid for by the RNC. Pretty sure a few of the 10-15K people showing up for the event will patronize local businesses. Republicans tend not to cause as much damage/create messes as other groups. I see this as a win-win event for everyone... even for Democratic business owners/tax payers.
Memberships to the NAT are ~12/month.. that ~39cents day for this month... That's nothing to compared to the 5+ trillion dept and devaluation of the dollar, shrinking workforce/income levels, and doubling of Gas prices this country has experienced in the last 4 years. I as a republican don't have to luxury of having a NAT membership ...too busy working/paying taxes/keeping business running, but if I See you.. I'll give you 50cents.

What about all the hard working Nat employees that are now down one day of pay? Will the RNC compensate them as well? There is a fantastic venue at the Riverfront. Why not hold the event there right next to the parking garages rather than disrupt the entire city and take money away from working folks?

I am certain that all locations were checked due to security traffic flow, etc. Anywhere its held by either candidate will disrupt something or someone. Be thankful you still have a job to worry about your work hours taken away. Perhaps you ought to spend the time listening to Romney ideas that will help you keep that job and bring back a bustling economy.

"Be thankful you still have a job to worry about your work hours taken away."

Wow. Would you be thankful if you had to take a cut in pay if either candidate was coming to visit? For the record, I don't work for the city. I just think it's insulting to those hard working individuals to have to lose a day's wages.

And for the record, I have spent time listening to Romney's ideas. Both sides of many issues, in fact.

I agree that an influx of people is good for the city's businesses. I just take issue with forcing people to take a day off work without pay.

I as a Democrat also work, pay taxes and help keep a business running. It seems we have a lot in common. All of our problems cannot be solved by members of one political party or another. It will take all of us, working together.

Just a thought.

Shawn,
you need to communicate that thought to Harry Reid, Chucky Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. They have not shown any ability to work together with Republicans. I will tell Boehner and McConnell the same.

I am elated that Mr. Romney will be in our City. Why are people searching for only negative effects that could potentially come from his visit? Can't we see any positive in this? The Nat will be shut down for a day, 24 hours, that is all. Given that it is open almost every other day of the year, I find this the least bit concerning to the city or it's patrons. The Nat has already extended its members the extra day so members will not be wasting their money by paying for today. The Natatorium parking lot holds more people than the immediate downtown area anyhow. How about this event will allow our local young people the opportunity to take part in a historic event - become informed? Even if they don't side with Romney, they can stand and hear the issues - pro or con. How about local business will thrive from the flood of people coming in for food and/or shopping today? How about the national coverage our city will obtain from his visit? I can only see great things coming from this. I am a young person and I haven't made up my mind as to who I'm voting for yet this election; but I can tell you that I feel absolutely privileged to have been given the opportunity to have BOTH candidates close enough that I could physically go and see them, listen to all issues and make an informed educated yet independent decision.

Well put Hef. I know a local resident who is going to walk for 1 hour each way with her kids so she can see Romney in person. What a great opportunity for our local communities. We have a big decision to make this fall and I hope you get the answers you need.

I think the citizens of our community have some messed up priorities...hence the condition of our nation. I personally see this as an opportunity my children may never have again to get this close and listen to a presidential hopeful. Maybe there are other possible places this could have been held but why can't we respect the decision made and embrace it with a positive outlook. It is quite obvious from some of the comments where people's priorities are, sadly.

The mayor has extended the membership for people who use the Natatorium by this one day that members of this lucky community have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The complainers sound like Democrats who I'm sure would welcome a visit to the same facility by Obama. Let's listen open mindedly to both sides before making a decision on who proposes the best solution to our deep problems. I am so concerned about economy--but also about our standing in the erupting problems across the world. The U.S. used to be strong and #1 in our world standing--with the focus ONLY on ourselves and our immediate situations, I believe we're losing sight of the forest for the trees. We need to regain that standing--for the sake of our children and grandchildren.
