Police Release Name of Officer Involved in Copley Shooting

Copley officer and retired former Copley officer confronted shooter Michael Hance on Schocalog Road, killed Hance.

Ben Campbell is the Copley Police officer who 51-year-old Michael Hance on Schocalog Road, just moments after Hance shot -- including Copley High School and an 11-year-old boy.

Police release Campbell's name this morning. The officer is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a use of force investigation by the Summit County Sheriff's department and evaluation by the Summit County Prosecutor.

Campbell and a civillian, former Copley Police officer Keith Lavery, confronted Hance outside 1219 Schocalog Rd, where Hance had just chased and killed 11-year-old Scott Dieter. Hance shot the boy to death after forcing his way into a basement and ordering the family who sheltered the child out of their home.

Copley Police Chief Michael Mier has said police believe it was the officer's bullet that stuck and killed Hance after he refused to drop his weapon.
