Police Blotter: Man Gets Ride To Jail Instead of Home

The following information was supplied by the Fairlawn Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

It's not a taxi service

An Akron man was charged with disrupting public service and underage drinking after twice calling the 911 line early this morning asking for a ride home. He got a ride to the Summit County Jail, instead.

Police report that the 18-year-old "sounded intoxicated" when he used his cell phone to call 911 at 1:24 a.m., stating he was in front of 3600 W. Market St. and needed a ride home.

The responding officer couldn't locate the man, who again called 911 to say he was now walking near . The officer found him across the street in the parking lot.

The offficer reported the man “had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person and his speech was slurred ... (he) admitted to making the 911 calls from his cell phone and was placed under arrest,” according to the police report.

After being read his rights, the man “admitted that he was drinking alcohol at his house along with getting high. He then went to the movies in Montrose and his friends left him so he called 911 for a ride back to Akron,” the report stated.

Police discovered the man had an active warrant for his arrest through the . Fairlawn police charged him with underage drinking and disrupting public service, both first-degree misdemeanors, then turned him over to a Bath officer, who transported him to Summit County Jail to be booked on the warrant.

These boots were made for walking

A Uniontown man who was already banned from all Walmart stores was arrested Tuesday at the and charged with criminal trespassing and theft after walking out of the store in a new pair of boots.

Fairlawn police were called at 5:18 p.m. Tuesday by a Walmart loss prevention agent to report he had a shoplifter in custody in the security office.

The agent told police he saw the 39-year-old man shopping in the shoe department. "(He) selected a pair of black boots valued at $40.46, placed the boots on his feet and exited the store without paying for the merchandise,” according to the police report.

Police said the suspect admitted to the theft after being read his rights. The Walmart agent checked the stores' history and discovered the man was banned from all Walmart stores on Sept. 4.

Police charged him with theft, a first-degree misdemeanor, and criminal trespass, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. The man was then released with a summons to appear in Akron Municipal court.

The boots were retained by Walmart, and the man "remains banned from all Walmart stores indefinitely," according to police.
