Purple and yellow balloons fluttered in the wind as members of the Copley community gathered Tuesday night to remember the victims of last year's shooting rampage in the Goodenough neighborhood.
Seven lives were taken by 51-year-old Michael Hance, including two Copley High School students, when he opened fire in the neighborhood on Aug. 7, 2011.
"It's nice to see people come out," said Amelia Shambaugh's godmother Karen Peterson. "It opens wounds like this just happened yesterday. But I remember the outpouring of love we were given and it makes it easier."
Among the victims was 11-year-old Scott Dieter, his father Craig Dieter, 17-year-old Copley High students Autumn Johnson and Amelia Shambaugh, Russ and Gertie Johnson and their son Brian Johnson.
Still recovering is Rebecca Dieter.
Hance was also killed when gunfire exchanged between him and Copley police Ptlm. Ben Campbell.
"Time has been my best friend in this," Campbell said. "In the first couple months I replayed the situation over and over in my mind, but now I think about it less and less. I'm moving forward, but we'll always remember the victims."
Earlier this year, Campbell was honored by President Barack Obama for his heroism.
Grace Church Pastor Jeff Bogue said the community should be grateful that they have each other to rally around.
"We don't have answers to all these questions but we do know that our community will stand strong," Bogue said. "When we go through trying times, we will go to each other."
