Man Denied Electric Service Due to Identity Theft
The following information was supplied by the Fairlawn Police Department.
A Fairlawn man learned he was a victim of identity theft when he called Ohio Edison for service and learned there was an $800 past-due bill in his name for an Akron residence he never lived in.
The man, 22, reported to Fairlawn Police on Aug. 8 that he called Ohio Edison to set up electric service in his name at an apartment in the 2600 block of Chamberlain Road.
An Ohio Edison representative denied the man service because he owed more than $800 dating to May 2011 for a property on South Balch Street in Akron.
The man told police he has never lived on Balch Street and has no relatives or friends who live on that street. He said this is the only fraudulent activity involving his name that he is aware of.
